Vintage inspiration is here to stay when it comes to weddings, and with such a multi-faceted concept, there are so many ways to add vintage elements to your Big Day. From fun and flirty to Gatsby grandeur, couples can take as much or as little inspiration to express their personalities.
At Lily Houston Design, we love all things vintage, but for Autumn and Winter weddings, you just can't beat the glamour and sparkle that come with 1920s and '30s inspired weddings. With everything from Flappers to ever-so sophisticated early Hollywood glamour, this era brings a grown-up edge to vintage inspiration.
As with any theme, you can draw in your inspiration as much or as little as you like, but if you're going for a truly vintage themed bridal look, our blog will help you to stay on trend with that 1920's glamour. We've even created a collection of all the featured jewellery and accessories for you here.
Choosing your dress
For a vintage glamour look, there are a few silhouettes that you can look to - and none of them involve tulle and petticoats! The 1920s look was much more relaxed and simple, with dresses often cut straight or with just a little bit of movement. But this is not to say that there were boring by any means; dresses that channel the roaring twenties are embroided, beaded and covered with lace detailing, with glitz and sparkles a major component on the dresses as well as the accessories.
To achieve a silhouette that embodies the feel of the jazz age, look for a column or sheath dress, or for something a little more flowing, an empire line or a delicate trumpet is just as striking.
In terms of the decoration you have so many options, with simple ivory satins and silks, intricate antique lace and miniscule beading all suiting the age and theme. You can have so much fun choosing your vintage glamour dress and really suit your personality and individual style!
Accessorising your look
Here at Lily Houston Design, we believe that how you choose to accessorise your hair on your wedding day is one of the most important details - after all, think how many photos there will be of your head and hair. Choosing hair accessories for vintage weddings is super fun as you just have so many different options open to you, and the key is to err on the side of extravagant! Whether you want to keep it classic with a headband, choose a sparkling hair vine or keep it simple with pins and combs, we've selected our most Jazz Age evoking hair accessories to perfect your vintage glamour look.
Hair bands are perhaps the obvious choice to inject some sparkle into your vintage wedding, and they are so versatile, working with up dos and loose tresses. Choose a band with off-centre detailing for a truly authentic look.
Traditionally associated with boho weddings, hair vines can create a stunning vintage look if you choose the right piece. Vines can be worn woven through the hair or as a crown, but for a more vintage look can be worn across the forehead or along the back of loose curls, as with the 'Penrose' below. A unique twist on a traditional vintage bridal look, choose a vine that sparkles as much as you!
Hair Combs and Clips
Another classic accessory, hair combs and clips create a super vintage feel in any up do. Wear in a side parting for a hair band effect or tucked into a low bun or chignon for a timelessly elegant look.
Customise your look
Whatever dress you choose, whether it fits your vintage vision or not, you can always customise your look to be even more vintage and unique! Belts and sashes add a new dimension to any dress, and you can choose to wear it all day, or mix and match the look for the ceremony and reception. The same goes for veils; choose a vintage birdcage style or opt for something more traditional but with vintage lace edging a nod to your theme.
The same applies to your shoes - whatever style you choose, adding vintage style shoe clips creates an individual and striking look.
Last but not least, are jewellery and bags. These are always a super fun way to add a personal touch to your look (and maybe spoil some of your wedding party too!)
Styling the day
Vintage theming is so fun to organise, with everything from your invitations to your transport easily transported back to the 1920s. Choosing quirky fonts and lots of metallic for your stationery and table settings works wonders, and you can even choose table names that reflect some of your favourite icons from the era, from authors to socialites.
Arrive in style in a classic car (we love a Rolls Royce) or hire an old double decker bus to transport your guests! Instead of a guest book, why not have an old fashioned typewriter for your guests to write lovely notes and post them in a mini post box.
For welcome drinks opt for stylish Martinis and Cosmos or simply serve your fizz in old fashioned coupe glasses. To really make a splash, get hold of a vintage ice cream van to serve your drinks!
As with all theming, take as little or as much inspiration as you like to make your big day perfect for your personalities, and most importantly, enjoy it!
