Living on our little island, it's so easy when fantasising about your wedding to picture it on a beach at sunset, with the sand between your toes and the waves gently crashing on the shore...but, honestly, that's not too likely unless you are jetting off to sunnier climes to tie the knot!
Destination weddings are gorgeous, but they just won't work for every couple. Here are Lily Houston Design's top picks for having the outdoor wedding of your dreams, without leaving our shores (whatever the weather!)
Have a back-up plan
Most venues offer indoor/outdoor packages, meaning if the weather is fine you can set your ceremony up outside, but if not it can be hastily relocated to an indoor space. We strongly recommend having the indoor option available. Our weather is never predictable, so make sure you're also happy with the indoor space on offer when booking!
Choose a marquee or tipi
One of the most popular options for outdoor weddings in the UK & Ireland is a semi-open tipi or marquee. This will keep you and your guests (and band, DJ, caterers, etc.) warm and dry whatever the weather, but still gives the feel of an outdoor space and allows you to enjoy nature if the weather is fine!
Create your own photo booth using nature
Hanging quirky picture frames amongst trees is such a fun way to create a photo booth for your guests. If you choose an area that is largely covered and not too far from the inside space, your guests will be able to snap unique memories whatever the weather!
Choose a view
This is an especially good idea if you're getting married in the winter months, but still want to create the feeling of an outdoor wedding. Venues like Tunnels Beaches in North Devon offer outstanding views across the sea, and access to outdoor spaces in good weather!
Keep it warm
Some of our favourite wedding photos are always from later in the evening, so make sure you have everything you need to keep your guests warm so they can continue the fun outdoors! If your venue has access to a fire pit, definitely take advantage! Surround it with deckchairs, or hay bales for a more rustic feel, and pop a basket of blankets outside for chilly legs.
Keep it dry
If you are committed to an outdoor wedding, whatever the weather, invest in umbrellas and awnings to keep you and your guests dry in case it rains. You can also opt for indoor photo booths (maybe in a vintage camper van!) to avoid drizzly pictures!
And remember, whatever the weather does, you will have the most perfect day - enjoy it!
